So, in a bizarre turn of events thing, it turns out several people here are reading Dumas' The Three Musketeers for the first time, myself among them. Rather then continue to talk about this book in Aja's J16 thread, I figured we could leave that thread to discussion of the awesome art work and talk about the book here.

Be warned, the book is not the same as the movies you've seen.
There will be spoilers ahead.
So, if you care about reading the book, consider yourself warned.

The Three Musketeers are dicks? Even moreso than they were in the last movie? Please share more information, SEE.

Yes indeed. The movies tend to paint all four of the main characters as lovable rogues, maybe not the nicest guys but generally good people. In the book, they are perpetually broke, generally due to their own idiocy , they treat their lackeys as slaves, spend a considerable amount of time seducing married women in order to pay for their debts... As an example, d'Artagnan refuses to pay his rent and threatens his land lord with bodily harm if he so much as brings the topic up, then seduces said landlords wife for good measure.

In what may be the most dickish move I've read recently, d'Artagnan in an effort to meet Milady DeWinter (you'll remember her from the movies as the hot chick who's a badass), convinces her maid/attendant that he's interested in her (the maid), using his access to the maid he overhears Milady expressing interest in a local Duke and intercepts her invitation to the Duke. He pretends to be the Duke and visits Milady at night (Nudge Nudge), then, still using her maid as an assistant in this, intercepts her letters to the Duke asking him for another visit, he writes back (pretending to be the Duke still) that he's dumping her for one of his many other conquests.
At this point in a typical comedy movie, most guy characters would be happy to have bedded a hot chick then made her feel terrible after words. Not our D though. He's only half done.
He visits Milady again, this time as himself and manages to talk her into sleeping with him as revenge against the Duke. The next morning, lying in bed with her, he decides to tell her about the entire incident and proceeds to laugh at her.
Then is surprised when she gets a knife and tries to kill him.
