Haha, no offense intended! I wasn't thinking of anywhere in particular. (But isn't that the way it always is? "As long as X doesn't Y, we're safe!")

Oh, by the way, there's a common story told to kids in the US about a little Dutch boy who saw that the dike was leaking during a storm, and stuck his finger in the leak to save the town. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to have some sort of moral, but darned if I can figure out what it is. I've always wondered--do you have the same story over there?

We do! =D I can't believe that you know that way over there, that's pretty damn awesome XD

As for the moral...I either forgot it, or there are a few... Oh well, not that important =P

I'm tempted to look it up, but somehow I don't think I'd like the results of googling "Boy sticks finger in dike"... ...I'm so sorry

Back on topic for a moment, have you heard any news stories about Japan using robots for rescue work, or working on the nuclear plants? I haven't personally, and I thought it kind of odd since Japan is considered one of the world leaders in robotics technology.

So true! Shocked For non-Internet-scariness reasons, too--in flood-fighting training I learned that plugging a leak like that is the second best way to cause a breach! (The best is to just leave the leak alone.) That story has bothered me ever since.

Thanks for bringing that up! A quick Google search revealed dozens of articles on that very subject. The most informative article was on the IEEE Spectrum blog.

The quick answer is: Japan doesn't have the kind of robots required for this type of situation. France is the only country in the world with a fleet of robots designed for such work, and has already sent at least one plane-load to Fukushima where the robots are now at work.

The long answer is read the article. It's fascinating, easy to understand, and well worth your time.

Oh noes: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/29/japan-lost-race-save-nuclear-reactor

Updates from IAEA: http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/tsunamiupdate01.html

So reactor 2 may have a containment breach? It's not very clear give the info available and no other place is reporting on this.
