Sometimes it's hard to tear your attention away from one shiny thing to another...

*Rolls a bottle cap into a busy 8 lane super-highway*
*whistles innocently*

I suppose not everyone has majored in the dark arts or a similar field. Normally this would be taught in a 101 course or whatever.

There are many reasons to use your powers for evil. Let us take an example from history. The priestly class which served Lucideus were constantly at the beck and call of the mundanes (pretty much everyone else). Their work hours were long and they were extremely stressed. Yes, they had magical powers, but they had no time to use it for themselves. Following the revolt, the priests used their powers almost exclusively for personal reasons. The net affect was, an increase in the general health of the priests (peasants could take care of themselves anyways), greater productivity (the GNP and GDP almost skyrocketed!), and an increase in cultural interests.

One does not need to be evil in order to use one's powers for evil. A chaotic neutral individual may, at one point, utilize her powers in such a manner that the side of evil benefits. Therefore, it is probably better to rephrase your question as, "Is it better to be good or evil?"

Scholarly literature approaches this problem through economics. The marginal benefit is simply too great and the opportunity cost of being good is not considered a viable risk. In recent years, this model has been criticized as too simple. It employs the existence of Homo malevolent, the idealized evil person, and Homo benefactor, the idealized goody-two-shoes. Nevertheless, it provides a decent outline on the motives behind malfeasance.

There are some good books introducing basic evil theory:

"Laws of Insidiousness" by George Narcissa, Princeton Press, 2006.

"Introduction to Bad People and How to be One" by Faustus Greysham, Penguin Books, 2004. (This one is my personal favorite. I highly recommend it.)

"Hellish Persona: A Study Into The Psychology Of Tyrannous Overlords" by Lilith Malfoy, Yale Collection on the Dark Arts, 2009. (This is kinda deep, but the first few chapters give a good background on the basic theories. The author has no relation to Lucius Malfoy.)

"The Naked Oubliette" by Jenna Fischer, New Directions, 2006. (Mostly about building and managing a dungeon. A good read.)

I hope this helps.

*chases the bottlecap towards the road, but gets distracted by one of those cute cat motivational posters stuck to the wall in what's supposed to be a 'cheerful' manner but that winds up just looking sickening*

Ack! The cuteness is too much! My eeeeeeeeeeeyes! The goggles do nothing!

(Damn straight I'm easy to distract, you would be too if you were stuck in class doing the exact same set of extremely basic maths that you'd already done twice this YEAR.)

Oh dear. I wasn't really expecting it to make a big impression. ^^; I guess I'd better stay committed to finishing the story!

I say, that's dangerous!

What if Xiao hadn't been distracted? She might have stolen the wheels right off those cars. Think of the poor drivers. Stern

(P.S. Tulsi, that was epic. Cheese!)

It wasn't that dangerous.
Anyone who knows kender knows that they're luck incarnate. Luck will always save them before they cause too much trouble or do something terminally stupid, but only after they've gotten their party imprisoned by the local magistrates for a sudden shoplifting spree. But that's ok, because a kender's natural dexterity and affinity for lockpicking will have them all out just as soon as they get a good meal (Hey, adventurers have to eat sometime, and it's not like they pay for prison food).

Now if you want to talk really dangerous for a kender...
I happen to have a bag full of chrome plated mouse traps somewhere.
