Hi all! I thought it would be fun to get one of Aja's J16 drawing and color it to the best of my ablity. I d/l ed Gimp softwear and have been playing with it. I would like feedback/ advice on how to improve. If anyone has any experince with the Gimp program that would be awesome! I really would like to know how to get my colors to be soft around the edges. Now I kind of feel like I've distoryed Aja's wonderful work!

Oh, I see why you're having trouble. It always does that if you fill in the color on the same layer as the lineart. The trick is to make a new layer for the color, and put it underneath the layer with the lineart. Then if you set the lineart layer mode to "Multiply," the white areas between the lines will turn transparent, and you'll be able to see through to the color layer. Then you can just add color to the color layer with the pencil or paintbrush tools.
I've never used the program, but the Gimp site has a coloring tutorial for just this sort of thing. (There are also pages with more details on layers and layer modes.)
I hope that helps. :D _________________ "The one concession a sane man will never yield the universe is that of considering it seriously."

Thank you for finding that for me Aja! But I do the layers thing but then I can't see the drawing that I want to color. Is that how it's suppouse to be? I just want to make pretty pictures!

Oh hey, apparently my roomie has Gimp on her computer. I found out there's actually a simpler way than what I explained. XD
You just have to open the image file, and...
1. Create a new layer (if it prompts you, make sure the fill is set to either White or Transparency).
2. Set the new layer's mode to Multiply.
Then just color on the new layer, and the lines should automatically show through like in the picture above. :D _________________ "The one concession a sane man will never yield the universe is that of considering it seriously."

Oh yeah, you'll want to use the paintbrush and eraser tools:
And that right there is pretty much everything I know about Gimp. XD
New program interfaces are always confusing, but don't be afraid to play around with all the tools and see what they can do. If you really mess something up, you can undo it with the digital artist's best friend, Ctrl+Z. _________________ "The one concession a sane man will never yield the universe is that of considering it seriously."

This is my second try at coloring. I think I've improved a bit. The reason that the vest looks wonky is because I tried something that didn't really work out.

That's definitely looking better. :D And don't worry, wonkiness is inevitable when you try new things. That just means you should keep trying, though! Once you get the hang of it, digital coloring is a lot of fun.
Heh, I like the purple wrapping on the kunai. I guess if she does hit Kakashi, he'll know who did it. _________________ "The one concession a sane man will never yield the universe is that of considering it seriously."

The layer suggestion really helped the coloring! I might try to recolor this again so that the vest looks right. It's been fun trying to figure out how to color and then putting that into action. If I do color that again, I might try sometihng with the background. The reason that the knife is wrapped in purple is because in the stories that I right for Jeo, she has these speical knifes that she designed herself. That what the feather shaped holders are for. The knifes are called "Phoenix Feathers"

I'm finding this educational myself. But I still prefer coloring with real things. |
