November 20th Update!

Page 417 is up! (And if you're a patron, you can check out the next 2 pages too!)

This week, let me tell you about...

Rachel Aaron

In the spirit of the NaNoWriMo season, let's talk about writing!

Specifically, I'd like to share the blog of one of my favorite writers. Rachel creates delightfully fun stories, many of which (the epic fantasy Eli Monpress novels, the urban fantasy Heartstrikers series, the litRPG Forever Fantasy Online...) have kept me happily entertained through countless hours of comic drawing.

Even better, she takes the time to analyze the process of making fun stories, and has generously shared her insights and techniques with her readers.

Here are some of my favorite articles on writing strategy and process:

How I Went From Writing 2,000 Words a Day to 10,000 Words a Day

The Turtle Method for Faster, Better, More Fun Writing

How I Plot a Novel in 5 Steps

Editing for People Who Hate Editing

There's a ton of simple-yet-powerful advice packed into each of those. I still reread them every year or so, and I'm always glad when I do. They invariably remind me of something I could be doing to resolve a plot snag, organize my notes better, or just have more fun with the whole writing process. ♥

If you create stories in any medium, please do yourself the favor of exploring her blog!

(P.S. I took the Triangle of Writing Metrics from the 2K-to-10K post, and made a... slight modification for my own nerdy reference.)

The Adventures of Wiglaf and Mordred
The Adventures of Wiglaf and Mordred

Villain meets hero. Villain tries to lose hero. Hero becomes villain's best friend, whether villain likes it or not -- and that's just the beginning. It's a fun and light-hearted adventure, with an increasingly complex and intriguing story. Go see!

Thank You, Stan Lee

No recommendation post today (although I'll have a good one for you next week). I just want to take a minute to appreciate a real, honest-to-goodness comic book hero.

Stan Lee, man.

He's always been a wonderful source of inspiration, instruction, and even unexpected encouragement. His example has always made me want to work hard and never give up on bringing my ideas to life.

If you've ever enjoyed a graphic novel, a webcomic, or a superhero movie, it's safe to say that you've benefited from the results of his decades-long influence on the world of comics.

Our world will always be a more marvelous place because of his work.

Rest in peace, Stan. And thank you for everything. ♥

This week, let me tell you about...

Glitch Hop Community

Alternate Title: Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them

Here's one of my favorite channels, dedicated to one of my favorite genres. This music makes me very happy, and I hope it will brighten your day too. ♥

Check out a few fine examples:

Nestivus - Mind Made Up feat. Jimmy Antony (Gotta love those upbeat Daft Punk vibes.)

Eugene The Cat - Unexpected Vibes (Swing music was never really my cup o' tea... but just add some awesome bass, and oh boy. SO JAZZY. SO GOOD.)

Au5 & Heavy J - Dream Of Love feat. Kenny Raye (Glitch hop beats, dubstep wubs, classy retro vocals, and some delightful guitar shredding. This might just be... the perfect song.)

October 30th Update!

I'm still working nonstop to meet this month's deadlines, so today's recommendation will be pretty short:

I recommend that you have a safe, fun, and very happy Halloween! ♥

October 23rd Update!

This week, let me tell you about...

Do you like synth-heavy '80s music? I know I do.

Did you know that there are a ton of modern artists creating new songs in that lovely retro style? I DID NOT.

I was overjoyed to discover this channel, which apparently collects the best of this fabulous music. There are so many great songs here, I kind of don't know where to start with picking out examples, but...

Here are three tracks that might give you an idea of the spectrum of styles you can find on the channel (plus another long mix, because I can):

Scandroid - Rendezvous (Snazzy cyberpunk beats, for all your retro-sci-fi dancing needs.)

Thought Beings - Hazy (Wistful, melodic, and possibly the most '80s thing I've heard all month.)

DEADLIFE - Winter With Millie (Some chill, eerie darkwave. Perfect for the Halloween season.)

Replicant Cyberscape (A 1-hour mixtape of more spooky, cyberpunk awesomeness. Enjoy.) ♥
